RC Wins Silver In Fluvanna

The Rockbridge County High School volleyball team finished the first week of the season at 6-1, earning a 3-0 road win over Fort Defiance on Thursday and going 4-1 to win the Silver Bracket at the fifth annual Tom Farruggio Tournament on Saturday in Palmyra.

The Rockbridge County High School volleyball team finished the first week of the season at 6-1, earning a 3-0 road win over Fort Defiance on Thursday and going 4-1 to win the Silver Bracket at the fifth annual Tom Farruggio Tournament on Saturday in Palmyra.

After starting the season with a 3-0 road win over rival Parry McCluer in Buena Vista on Tuesday of last week, the Wildcats defeated Fort Defiance 25-20, 25-20, 25-18. Last year, RC and Fort faced off three times, with Fort winning twice.

In Thursday’s match, Maddie Dahl led the Wildcats with 11 kills, six blocks and 12 digs, while Sophia Perlozzo added eight kills. Nala Shearer paced the Wildcats with 22 digs, while Sophie Vaught led RC with six aces and had five kills and three blocks. Mackenzie McCormick added five kills and two blocks, Jada Hamilton contributed four blocks, and Rebekah Allen had 10 digs.

In the Tom Farruggio Tournament, which took place at Fluvanna County High School, the Wildcats faced five different opponents. The tournament is named for former Fluvanna County coach Tom Farruggio, who passed away in 2018.

The Wildcats earned 2-0 wins over Cumberland, Amelia, Monticello and Turner Ashby. RC’s lone loss was a 2-1 setback against Liberty Christian Academy.

RC was scheduled to play host to Parry McCluer last night and will play at Alleghany on Thursday. The Wildcats will begin Valley District action at Broadway on Thursday, Sept. 7 before playing host to Fort Defiance for a rematch on Monday, Sept. 11. All nights are scheduled to start with junior varsity action at 5:30 p.m.
