More than 100 pounds of marijuana was confiscated from a campsite on North Mountain by the Rockbridge County Sheriff’s Department. Three men from the Richmond area were arrested in connection with the incident. - First day enrollment for Lexington and Rockbridge County schools was down, despite the addition of kindergarten classes in Rockbridge.
- The 1973 Cancer Crusade in Rockbridge raised a record sum of $11,095, almost $2,600 more than the goal of $8,500.

At the annual Labor Day fest in Buena Vista’s Glen Maury Park, U.S. Sen. George Allen declared that democracy was alive and well in Buena Vista, as five people were running for clerk of the court in Buena Vista. -To meet the demand for rapid deployable shelters in the military conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq, Bea Maurer Inc. in Fairfield expanded its facilities with a 32,000-square-foot addition.
- The new golf course under construction in Buena Vista was at least $50,000 over budget and there were indications that the road to the course would cost more to construct than had been originally estimated.
