Rescued Donkey Gives Birth

A pregnant donkey rescued by the Glasgow Volunteer Fire Department on Aug. 26 gave birth last week.

A pregnant donkey rescued by the Glasgow Volunteer Fire Department on Aug. 26 gave birth last week.

“Everyone is well and alive and healthy,” said the donkey’s owner, Billy Potter.

According to Facebook post by the Glasgow Volunteer Fire Department, the department was c alled b y Effinger Fire & EMS a nd t he Rockbridge County Sherriff’s Office animal control to rescue a pregnant donkey, named Emma, who had gotten stuck in deep mud Blacks Creek Area Pond.

“Crews were able to maneuver straps under Emma and secured them in a means to not cause harm to her or her little one,” the fire department wrote, “then a mechanical advantage system was utilized to pull and free her from the mud,” according to the post.

Potter expressed gratitude to all who were involved in the rescue.

“All the credit goes to the Glasgow Fire Department volunteers,” he said. “They showed up so prepared, they weren’t standing around, they got out of the car with their idea all ready and formed a chain to pull her out. Nobody was scared to get muddy or dirty.”

The donkey gave birth to a healthy foal on Thursday morning.

“Want to thank everyone,” said Potter. “The animal control officer, the fire department – their team is A1.”
