Enduring close sets, the Rockbridge County High School volleyball team earned a 3-0 road win over Alleghany on Thursday in Low Moor to improve to 8-1 overall.

The Wildcats, coming off a 3-0 home win over Parry McCluer two days earlier battled to a 25-23, 25-21, 28-26 victory over the Cougars. The match was played at the former Clifton Middle School because the Alleghany High School gym was being worked on. Alleghany and Covington high schools merged entering the 2023-24 academic year.

Sophie Vaught led RC with 12 kills, while Maddie Dahl had nine kills, four blocks and two aces. McKenzie Burch paced the Wildcats with 31 assists and 12 digs and recorded eight kills, while Nala Shearer served up six aces.

Reviewing her team’s performance, RC head coach Kassidy Beagan said, “We did a great job, focusing in on our team’s strengths. We were working hard to keep Alleghany out of system so that we could work on our offense.”

Beagan said Alleghany “was very scrappy and gave us a good workout for sure. We also did a good job of picking up tough balls and receiving their tough serves.”

“Overall, this was a great volleyball matchup,” added Beagan.
