It’s time to say farewell to hummingbirds, tanagers, thrushes, warblers and other songbirds migrating south – and welcome back early winter returnees.
Rockbridge Bird Club members invite area residents to join them for their first fall outing this Saturday morning, Sept. 9, at Boxerwood.
Boxerwood walks, scheduled on the second Saturday of each month, are an excellent introduction for those new to birding. During the September walk, participants are likely to see migrating songbirds stopping to refuel as they continue to travel further south as well as those returning to winter in Rockbridge.
Meanwhile, area residents are encouraged to turn out lights at night this month during the peak of fall migration. Many songbirds migrate at night, using the stars and moon to help them navigate. Lights can disorient them, leading to collisions with buildings or windows.
Birders will meet in the parking lot at Boxerwood (963 Ross Road) for Saturday’s walk at 8:30 a.m. for a two-hour stroll. Participants should bring their own binoculars and wear sturdy footwear.
Walks are cancelled for rain. For more information or an iffy weather update, visit the Rockbridge Bird Club on Facebook or contact Wendy Richards (540) 463-5214 or [email protected].
Note that the Oct. 14 walk will take place on the Chessie Nature Trail while Boxerwood readies for a spectacle scheduled that afternoon.
