Sept. 5, 1973

Two Lexington college students completed a cross country trek on their bicycles traveling over 3,000 miles from Lexington to San Francisco. - Several thousand people thronged Glen Maury Park for the annual Labor Day celebration. An estimated 7,000 people came out for the event, despite the soaring temperatures and thunder storms. - The Rotary Club was seeking public opinion and support for a Lexington city flag designed by David Dickens. The plan was to first display the flag at the Christmas parade.

Sept. 10, 2003

Nobel laureate and Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel delivered a speech at Virginia Military Institute’s Cameron Hall. - Plans to establish a rescue squad in Effinger were approved by the Rockbridge Board of Supervisors.

- Lexington City Council adopted a resolution passed earlier by 24 other local governing bodies along Interstate 81 calling on VDOT to pursue rail as a major component in plans to reduce tractor-trailer traffic on I-81.
