Raising funds for the Parry McCluer High School cross country teams, the annual Labor Day 5-kilometer running race and 600-meter kids’ fun run welcomed 55 participants on Monday of last week in Buena Vista.
Race director Chris Poluikis, head coach for the PM cross country teams, was pleased by the turnout of the races. The Fighting Blues’ cross country runners volunteered at the event.
There were 42 participants in the 5K and 13 in the kids’ fun run, which was for children ages 9 and under. Both races were flat and started and ended at Camden Field, with the 5K going into downtown Buena Vista, prior to the Labor Day morning parade.
David Kiser won the 5K in 18 minutes, 28 seconds, and Ted Casperson placed second in 19:49. Finishing third among males and placing fourth overall was Adam Williams in 20:48.
Laurel Sheffield was the women’s winner, placing third overall in 19:57. Finishing second among females and placing 10th overall was Brianna Rogstad, clocking 23:23. The third female finisher was Katy Patterson, placing 13th overall in 24:16.
Male group winners were Caden Mason (17 and under, 18th overall in 26:39), Hayden Bartley (18-29, 14th in 24:18), Daniel Stinnett (30-39, seventh in 21:50), Jared Lee (40-49, fifth in 21:05) and John Dyer (50 and over, eighth in 22:45).
Female age group winners were Ali Wheeler (18-29, 15th in 24:21), Joy George (40-49, 39th in 39:52) and Emily Whitworth (50 and over, 27th in 30:55).
In the 600-meter kids’ run, which took place at Camden Field, Julia Chipley won in 2:28.94, Natalie Casperson placed second in 2:37.19, and Peter Cooper was the boys’ winner and finished third in 2:46.3. Chipley won the girls’ 9-and-under age group, and Casperson won the girls’ 10-12 age group. There was only one age group represented for the boys, 9-and-under.
