Rockbridge Bird Club’s fall season starts Monday, Sept. 18, with a presentation by Dick Rowe on “Birds of Maine,” in the Piovanno Room at Rockbridge Regional Library, at 7 p.m. A social gathering precedes the talk at 6:30.

Rowe, an acclaimed avian photographer and professor of biology at Virginia Military Institute, will present a travelogue of his experiences birding along the coast of Maine, Petit Manan Island, and from behind a photo blind on Machias Seal Island, a breeding sanctuary for Atlantic puffins, Northern gannets, Razorbills, and other pelagic birds, species that spend most of their lives on the open sea. His talk also includes visits to seashore, saltmarsh and bog habitats.

Rowe teaches ornithology and vertebrate biology at VMI. He has long served as RBC’s club ornithologist, organizes the annual Lexington Christmas Bird count and leads field trips. He continues to expand his online resource, “The Birds of the Greater Rockbridge County, Virginia Area,” which combines historical and recent records to create a detailed account of each species found in Rockbridge County.
