Rockbridge County attorney Vickie Huffman is retiring early next year. Huffman notified the county last week that she plans to retire Feb. 29.

Huffman, a Rockbridge County native, has been county attorney for 19 years. When she was hired in September of 2004, she was the county’s second full-time attorney.

In giving the county six months notice of her plans to retire, she said Tuesday, she wanted to give the county plenty of lead time to look for her successor.

During the Board of Supervisors meeting on Monday, Chairman David McDaniel said Huffman’s “guidance and advice has been instrumental for me.” Supervisor Jay Lewis said the next county attorney is going to have “big shoes to fill.”

The matter of starting the process of selecting the next county attorney was referred to the supervisors’ personnel committee.

A 1975 graduate of Lexington High School, Huffman worked previously as the senior assistant attorney for Roanoke County. She held that post for four years and was an assistant Roanoke County attorney for a total of 15 years.

A 1985 graduate of the Washington and Lee University School of Law, she worked for four years in the Lexington law offices of Eric Sisler and Bucky Joyce. She is a 1979 graduate of James Madison University.

Asked what she planned to do in retirement, Huffman said, “Whatever I want.” She said she does hope to travel some and visit with family.
