Charles Taber "Chucky" Burgdorf, 56, of Vesuvius died Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2023.

Charles Taber "Chucky" Burgdorf, 56, of Vesuvius passed away peacefully surrounded by his family after a hard fought battle with cancer on Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2023.

Born May 14, 1967, in Canandaiqua, N.Y., he was a son of Rosella Colleen O'Neil Burgdorf and Charley Taber Burgdorf.

Chucky was a graduate of Rockbridge High School and he attended Dabney S. Lancaster Community College. He began his career with the Lexington Police Department in 1988 and joined the Rockbridge County Sheriff’s Office in 1992. He was a well-respected patrol deputy, D.A.R.E. officer, and School Resource Officer. He retired in 2018 and in 2020 he rejoined the office in a part-time position as a deputy where he served until his passing. He was a member of the National Ski Patrol and attended Marlbrook Baptist Church. He enjoyed spending time with his family, skiing, fishing, hunting, golfing, wood working and spending summers boating at Smith Mountain Lake on his beloved yellow boat the "Empty Nest".

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 33 years, Forrest Burgdorf; children, Tylar Marcum (Travis) and Taber Burgdorf (Mekayla); brother, Steven Patrick Burgdorf (Mary); sister, Debra Ann Taylor (Jerry); grandchildren, Wyatt James Marcum and Carson Rose Marcum; and many nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 19, at Marlbrook Baptist Church by Pastor John Tilley. Burial will follow at Little River Presbyterian Cemetery in Goshen. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 18, at Harrison Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Taber Burgdorf, Steve Burgdorf, Jerry Taylor, Ashby Taylor, Travis Marcum and Corey Tomlin.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Special Olympics, 3212 Skipworth Road, Suite 100 Richmond, VA 23294 or your local SPCA.
