Duo Region-Bound

RC Golf Team Closes Out Regular Season

The Rockbridge County High School golf team capped the regular season with a pair of events last week, finishing fourth in the final Valley District tournament of the fall and then competing against Lord Botetourt and Alleghany in a 9-hole event at the Lexington Golf & Country Club.

Two Wildcats, Andrew McCoy and Harrison Tanner, have also qualified for next Monday’s Region 3C tournament in Palmyra.

On Monday of last week, RC posted a team score of 329 in a district event at Shenvalee Golf Resort in New Market. McCoy led the way with a 72-stroke round, placing second overall. Tanner and Jack Jensen each carded an 82, while Dean Fafatas rounded out the scoring with a mark of 93.

William Monroe, which claimed the Valley District title, won the tournament with a team score of 303. The Dragons’ Carter Knick was the individual medalist after registering a round of 67 on the par-71 course.

“We just went into that match hoping to get Andrew [McCoy] and Harrison [Tanner] into regions, and they both made it,” RC head coach David Miller said. “That was our goal going into that match: to make sure those two held onto their spots.”

RC then finished off the regular season in Lexington last Wednesday with a 9-hole match against the Cavaliers and Cougars. LB’s Jeremy Simmons claimed medalist honors with a score of 33.

McCoy again led the Wildcats with a score of 36, and Tanner sank an eagle on the par-5 sixth hole.

“It was just a fun way to finish things up,” Miller said. “We usually have so much time between our last district match [and the regional tournament], that I always like to throw a little 9-holer in there.”

The regional tournament will be held at Lake Monticello Golf Course on Monday. The top two teams and the three best-scoring individuals will qualify for the Class 3 state tournament, so McCoy and Tanner will be aiming for that goal.

“I know they both have been working hard,” Miller said of the Wildcat duo. “They really want to get one of those three spots out of region to get to states. They’ve got as good a shot as anyone.”
