Friday, Jan. 27 – With balanced scoring, the Rockbridge County High School boys basketball team got out to an early lead and gradually pulled away to earn a 61-37 home win over Stuarts Draft on Friday night in Lexington.
The game was the nightcap of the first day of the ninth annual Rock the Ribbon Roundball Shootout, a two-day American Cancer Society fundraiser.
It was a much more dominant game than the previous meeting between the two teams, when the Wildcats earned a 68-61 road win on Jan. 11.
Andreas Poindexter scored 13 points to lead four Wildcats in double figures. Henry Lambert and Keaton Owsley each scored 12 points for RC (9-9), with Lambert sinking two 3-pointers, and Milo Mulitalo added 10 points. Matthew Burkhart scored eight points, and Brandon Mays chipped in six.
Donovan Jenkins paced the Cougars (7-10) with 13 points, while Harley Frome added 11 points, and Christian Moats chipped in five.
RC jumped out to a 9-2 lead before Draft cut it to 9-8, but the Wildcats then ended the first quarter on a 7-0 run to extend their lead to 16-8. The Wildcats increased their advantage double digits in the second quarter and led 30-19 at halftime.
With sharp shooting in the third quarter, the Wildcats started on an 11-2 run to go up by 20 points, and they outscored Draft 17-8 in the quarter to take a 47-27 lead into the final period.
The Cougars never threatened a comeback in the fourth quarter. With the large lead, the Wildcats let their reserves finish the game.
RC committed just nine turnovers, while the Cougars had 13.
The Wildcats will return to Valley District play at Spotswood on Tuesday, starting with junior varsity action at 5:30 p.m.
