The United Way of Rockbridge, Lexington and Buena Vista officially launched its 2023- 2024 campaign last week with an event recognizing its grant recipients from this past year’s campaign.
The goal of the new campaign is $200,000. This year, the organization will focus its efforts on allocations as well as creating a volunteer program to assist nonprofits in a tangible way throughout the year, said Jennifer Dent, executive director.
The United Way provided a total of $101,300 to 12 nonprofits from last year’s allocation funding. Those agencies will receive the funding starting in January.
“The United Way is honored to continue to play a role in helping our community meet the needs of its vulnerable populations. We are confident that the organizations we are working with this year will work together to improve access to food, education and community,” said Dent.
This year’s allocation recipients included Boxerwood Nature Center, Blue Ridge Legal Services, Campus Kitchen, Blue Ridge CASA for Children, The Coffee House of Rockbridge, Community Closet for Christ Church, The Community Table, Rockbridge Area Relief Association, Rockbridge Area Transportation System, The Talking Book Center, Valley Program for Aging Services, and Yellow Brick Road Early Learning Center.
Last allocations cycle, these area nonprofits served the Rockbridge area in many ways. For example, 1,406 families received vital food assistance, and 11% more local homebound adults received healthy, home-delivered meals. Throughout Lexington, Buena Vista and the county, 40,000 backpacks of nonperishable food were distributed to 17 different schools. Additionally, nearly 2,000 individuals received financial assistance with rent, utilities and heating fuel.
“We are thrilled to complete this year’s allocations process,” said board member and campaign chair Christian Worth. “As we begin our annual campaign this month, we’re invigorated by our community’s accomplishments and excited to see what the nonprofits in our area do next!”
