Claude H. Patton and Matthew W. Paxton Jr. were named to the Lexington board of The First National Exchange Bank of Virginia filling vacancies created when M.W. Paxton Sr. and M.M. Sterrett retired. - The House subcommittee on water resources approved $665,000 in planning funds for the Buena Vista flood control project. -A fight broke out during halftime at the Virginia Military Institute and Navy game after the visiting midshipmen removed the large homemade banners that had been displayed by cadets on the gymnasium.

Residents along South River in Rockbridge County bore the brunt of the flooding from Hurricane Isabel. Though no lives were lost, seven manufactured homes were destroyed and 32 personal vehicles were declared total losses.
- Lexington City Council unanimously approved an ordinance that would make the Lexington Lifesaving and First Aid crew building the only polling place for Lexington residents.
- John F.R. Scott III was appointed executive director of the Virginia Horse Center.
