Broadway Romps Past RC On Gridiron

Saturday, Sept. 23 -- The Rockbridge County High School football team (0-5) added another loss to its record in a Valley District matchup against Broadway (3-2) at home on Friday night, falling by a final of 50-6.

The Gobblers set the pace in the first quarter, taking an early 15-0 lead, and they didn’t let up all night. Quarterback Uriah Rutan controlled the ball well for Broadway in the air and using his own legs, and RC was unable to stop him.

The Wildcats primarily tried to push the ball by ground, with running back Elijah Fox doing most of the work. They were often met in the backfield or at right at the line of scrimmage by a sturdy Gobblers' defense.

Freshman quarterback Elijah Watkins got some reps on the field when starter Jayden Layman came out after getting drilled to the ground on an incomplete pass play midway through the first quarter. Layman returned for the second half.

The 'Cats managed to put up one touchdown at the end of the game, negating a shutout. Running back Ryan Maxwell charged through the pack and found the end zone for RC, bringing the final score to 50-6.

The Wildcats return to action next Friday, Sept. 29, with a 7 p.m. kickoff at Valley opponent East Rockingham.
