C ontinuing t o s how i mprovement, the Parry Mc-Cluer High wrestling team placed ninth of 18 teams at the Highlander Invitational on Saturday at Glenvar High School in Salem. The Fighting Blues, who were missing two grapplers, had three wrestlers who earned medals by placing in the top six.

Sophomore Jackson Brockenbrough led the way, placing second at 144-pounds, going 2-1 in the tournament. PM sophomore Cyler Driscoll also went 2-1, placing third at 106. At 113, freshman Clyde Vassar placed sixth, going 3-2.

Blues going 2-2 were senior Kabell Austin (215) and sophomore Timmy Lesher (285/heavyweight), while senior Cody Thomas (190) and sophomore Junior Convers (175) both went 1-2.

“We had a great weekend of wrestling,” said PM head coach Jeremiah Brockenbrough. “We seem to be getting better each weekend. As the competition gets better, we are rising up.”

The Blues were slated to play host to Pioneer District rival Bath County in a dual meet last Wednesday, but that meet was rescheduled for this Monday due to inclement weather. It was to be the Blues’ final competition of the regular season. The story and photos from the dual will be in next week’s newspaper.

Brockenbrough said the Blues are looking forward to the Region 1C tournament and qualifying as many wrestlers as possible for the Class 1 state tournament, which will take place Feb. 17-18 at the Salem Civic Center. The Region 1C tournament will be held on Saturday, Feb. 11 at Fort Chiswell, starting at 10:30 a.m.
