The Lexington Woman’s Club announces the opening of its annual Student Writing Contest. Students in kindergarten through grade 12 are eligible to submit to the club one original short story and/ or one original poem written in calendar year 2023.
These works will be judged locally, and winning students will be recognized at an awards ceremony in February. First- place entries will advance to the Shenandoah District Writing Contest. Winners may go on to the state and national levels.
Specific contest rules are available through the English and language arts teachers in the area schools and at the circulation desk of the Rockbridge Regional Library, Main Street, Lexington. Home-schooled students are eligible and encouraged to enter. Entries should be placed in a box at the circulation desk of the Rockbridge Regional Library in Lexington by Dec. 15.
This past year, Caitlin Carrington, a student at Rockbridge County High School, won first place in the nation for her short story. This national winner’s journey began right here in the club’s local writing contest.
The writing contest is just one of the ways the Lexington Woman’s Club encourages young people; in addition, the club helps provide supplies to kindergarten teachers, works to provide books to Head Start students, and sponsors scholarships which help students extend their education beyond high school. Supporting area students is one of the primary goals of the Lexington Woman’s Club.
