Sept. 22, 2023 Editor, The News-Gazette: A Republican candidate for the Virginia’s legislature has sent out fliers announcing that he supports the Second Amendment to the Constitution. Supreme Court decisions have guaranteed a very permissive view of the right to keep and bear arms, so that campaign plank doesn’t require much courage. Meanwhile, in Washington, Republicans in Congress are seeking for evidence that Hunter Biden discusses his legal troubles with his father.
Virginia, like the rest of the nation and the world, faces real and difficult issues, such as a refugee crisis amounting to hundreds of thousands, soon to be millions of people desperate to escape from destitution, tyranny, war, and climate change. President Biden has correctly and often warned us that global warming is real and increasing, to the point of becoming a threat to civilization itself. Real, effective mitigations are urgently needed, internationally. The forest fires, record temperatures, floods, etc., of the last year will likely be exceeded next year, and the year after, whether or not Hunter Biden works out a plea deal.
Meanwhile, however, consider how important this is: parents know that both concealed and open carry of firearms has been largely secured from government interference. Therefore, they can send their children off to school, every day, every week, in confidence that they will be safe, right? Oh, wait. PHILIP F. O’MARA Rockbridge County
