Sarah Jane Deacon, 68, of Raphine died Sept. 24

 

Sarah Jane (Schrumpf Hall) Deacon, 68, of Raphine passed away at her home on Sunday, Sept. 24, 2023.

She was born in 1955 in Elkins, W.Va., to William Joseph and Betty Jean Schrumpf. She was raised in Hagerstown, Md., with her two sisters, Rebecca and Rachel. 

She attended West Virginia University and Mississippi State University where she earned her bachelor’s degree in interior design. She had varied career pursuits as a farmer, educator, journalist, and adviser. 

Many will remember her contributions to the community as a Rockbridge County School Board member, 4-H volunteer, member of Timber Ridge Presbyterian Church, director of the Buena Vista Chamber of Commerce, and FCCLA adviser at Spotswood County High School.

Her love of music led her to participate in the community chorale, lead children's music programs, and ring handbells at Timber Ridge.

She is survived by her loving husband of 37 years, Lewis, and her children and their families: Julie and Allen Foster; Amanda, Julian and Audrey Dymacek; and Matthew Deacon and Olivia Ware. She is also survived by her sisters and their families: Rebecca Yeakle and Rachel and Norman Lehner. 

She is reunited in spirit with her parents, Bill and Betty, and her first husband, David Hall. 

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 7, at 11 a.m. at Mt. Carmel Presbyterian Church in Steeles Tavern. A fellowship meal will be provided by the family after the service.
