Rockbridge County is moving forward with hiring three additional emergency medical services responders after getting the green light from the Board of Supervisors on Jan. 23. The EMS workers are to begin answering calls April 1.
With the additional staffing, the Kerrs Creek Fire Department is to have paid responders 24 hours. A nighttime crew is to be housed at the 911 dispatching center (former Lomax Funeral Home) on U.S. 60 in Buena Vista. That crew will be available to provide secondary assistance primarily to departments in the south end of the county but also anywhere else that it’s needed.
The new staffing has one-time costs of $190,000 and annual costs of $175,000. Costs for the final quarter of fiscal year 2023 (from April 1 to June 30) will be $84,583. Reserve funds are to be tapped for these expenditures in the current fiscal year.
