For Ojure

Oct. 2, 2023 Editor, The News-Gazette: As a retired classroom teacher, I believe that school boards function best when people with teaching experience serve on them. Lenna Ojure not only has that experience (at the elementary, middle and high school levels), she also earned a PhD in curriculum and instruction at Virginia Tech. With that expertise, she advanced to teaching at the college level at both VMI and at W&L, where she directed the Teacher Education Program for 11 years.

Even in retirement, Lenna has never lost contact with our local schools and education programs through her volunteer work. Our library’s literacy program, Boxerwood’s education program, Natural Bridge Elementary and other county schools have all continued to benefit from her passion for educating our children.

Lenna understands the importance of supporting our teachers to build excellence in our schools while promoting systems that also make all students feel supported. And as a parent and grandparent, she wants to build bridges so there is good communication between schools, parents and our community. She will always stand up for what is best for our students, not influenced by fear-mongering. Instead, her focus will be on helping them become proficient in the academic, job and life skills they need to succeed.
