The Collierstown United Methodist Church will observe its 183rd homecoming celebration on Oct. 7 and 8. On Friday, Oct. 6, at 9:30 a.m. members are invited to the church to prepare the building and grounds for the weekend’s festivities. Saturday evening, Oct. 7, at 6, the homecoming celebration will begin with a program of special music provided by the Ladies of Mercy in the church sanctuary. A time of fellowship and light refreshments will follow the music program. On Sunday, Oct. 8, the 183rd homecoming worship service will begin at 11 a.m. It will be led by guest minister the Rev. Doug Mitchell who served as minister of the church from 2010 until 2013. A covered-dish luncheon will follow the worship hour.

The Effinger community churches will hold a “Trunk or Treat” event on Saturday, Oct. 21, from 3 to 5 p.m. in the field across from the Effinger Fire Department. This year’s Trunk or Treat will also offer a cakewalk activity. Funds raised from the sale of cakewalk tickets will be divided and donated to the community’s Rise Against Hunger meal packing day to be held in the spring and to the Challenger Baseball League for handicapped children in Roanoke. Church members will be in decorated cars handing out candy treats to the community’s children. Participating churches include the Collierstown Baptist, Collierstown Presbyterian, Collierstown United Methodist, Mt. Horeb United Methodist, Oxford Presbyterian, Rapps Church, and the Union View Advent Christian Church.

On Saturday evening, Oct. 21, there will be a spaghetti supper beginning at 5 at the Collierstown United Methodist Church. The meal includes all-you-can-eat spaghetti, tossed salad, bread, dessert, and assorted beverages. The cost of the meal is by donation.

Preparations are also underway at the Collierstown Presbyterian Church for the church’s annual church dinner that will be held on Saturday, Nov. 4, from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. Two building and grounds cleanup days for members and friends will be held on Oct. 21 and on Oct. 28. Work will begin at 8:30 a.m. on the church grounds and in the fellowship hall.
