Kat Maier will speak on her recent book, “Energetic Herbalism: A Guide to Sacred Plant Traditions through Integration of Elements of Vitalism, Ayurveda, and Chinese Medicine” at the Piovano Building Tuesday, Feb. 7, at 6:30 p.m. Presented by The Valley of Virginia Herb Guild, the program is free to the public.

Maier is a clinical herbalist with over 30 years of experience, as well as an author and teacher. She is the director and founder of the Charlottesville herbal education center, Sacred Plant Traditions, and has trained and inspired hundreds of her students to work as clinical herbalists and open herb schools.

Her book, “Energetic Herbalism,” is a guide to several world traditions of herbalism and 25 of the most essential medicinal plants, several of which we might consider weeds, but are important medicinal herbs ‒ chickweed, dandelion, goldenseal, burdock, to name a few. The book presents three different energetic systems: vitalism, ayurveda, and Chinese medicine – based on the idea of the elements that make up the universe and the body.

Maier has a deep appreciation of the wisdom of indigenous people, which is the foundation of sacred plant traditions. She is also deeply committed to the preservation of plants and has served as the president of United Plant Savers and was the recipient of the organization’s first Medicinal Plant Conservation Award.
