McCoy Fourth, Tanner Fifth In Region
Rockbridge County High School golfers Andrew McCoy and Harrison Tanner narrowly missed qualifying for the Class 3 state tournament after a solid performance at the Region 3C meet in Palymra last Monday.
McCoy and Tanner carded scores of 80 and 81, respectively, to finish fourth and fifth at Lake Monticello Golf Course. The top two teams and the top three individual qualifiers moved on to the state meet.
With eight teams and 60 total participants at the regional tournament, the two Wildcats had a tough challenge in store – and both came very close to advancing.
“To get from that space to states is pretty difficult,” RC head coach David Miller said. “To come in fourth and fifth is still pretty durn good. Tough not to get in, but I’m proud of their season and their year.” Western Albemarle won the team competition, while Wilson Memorial finished second overall to qualify for the state meet. With five holes remaining, McCoy was in a great position to grab one of the three individual spots, although a tough finish left him just short. Tanner also had an opportunity down the stretch, but it wasn’t meant to be.
“They both had a real good shot at it. They had a couple of bad breaks late,” Miller said. “They both battled all day. It’s a difficult golf course.”
RC has plenty to look forward to in 2024. McCoy will return for his final season, and Tanner will be a junior next year. The Wildcats also have plenty of other up-and-coming talent surrounding that duo.
“Andrew will be a senior, and he’s had a real strong career already. I know he’s hungry to get back out there,” Miller said. “I’m pretty excited about where we’re headed.”
