The Steamboat Institute, with major support from the Adolph Coors Foundation, has announced the fourth in a series of eight Campus Liberty Tour events for 2023, debating the question, “Do Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives do more harm than good in higher education, and should they be abolished?”

The debate will be held today, Wednesday, Oct. 11, at 6:30 p.m. at Washington and Lee University’s Stackhouse Theater. Preregistration is required and tickets are free and can be obtained at https://web.cvent. com/event/3485ce7c-09f2-43d5-83bf-1994d1fc2991/summaryfaed6363/summary. Two on-campus student groups, the College Democrats and College Republicans, are providing on-campus support for this debate.

Carol M. Swain, Ph.D., will argue the affirmative on the resolution, while Marc Lamont Hill, Ph.D., will argue the negative. The debate will be moderated by Steamboat Institute Tony Blankley Senior Fellow Patrice Onwuka, who is also director of the Center for Economic Opportunity at the Independent Women’s Forum.

“As the Campus Liberty Tour moves into its sixth year, we are looking forward to bringing another round of robust debates to college campuses,” said Steamboat Institute chairman and CEO Jennifer Schubert-Akin. “Our goal is not to tell students what to think, but to help teach them how to think critically about information that’s being presented to them.”

Swain is an award-winning political scientist, former professor of political science and professor of law at Vanderbilt University, and a lifetime member of the James Madison Society, an international community of scholars affiliated with Princeton University. Before joining Vanderbilt in 1999, Swain was a tenured associate professor of politics and public policy at Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs.

Hill is a presidential professor at the City University of New York Graduate Center, where he teaches courses in anthropology, urban education, and Middle Eastern studies. Prior to that, he held positions at Morehouse College, Temple University, and Columbia University. Hill is currently the host of BET News, The Grio, Al Jazeera Up-Front, and the Coffee & Books podcast.
