The ninth annual Rock the Ribbon Roundball Shootout welcomed big crowds to watch 11 high school basketball games last Friday and Saturday at Rockbridge County High School.
Numbers were still being added up for this year, but the event had raised a little over $80,000 for the ACS in its first seven years. The event was presented by ALCOVA Mortgage, with many other sponsors contributing.
All four local high school teams competed, as well as prestigious programs from Virginia and West Virginia, including the Oak Hill Academy and Huntington Prep (W.Va.) boys’ teams.
The RC boys were the local team playing on Friday night, coasting to a 61-37 win over Stuarts Draft. In a competitive game on Saturday morning, the Parry McCluer girls overcame James River 40-33. The PM boys then lost to Eastern Mennonite 67-55, and the RC girls suffered a 53-30 setback against Salem.
“It’s hard to believe that this was our ninth year for this event,” said Rock the Ribbon founder and director Travis Patterson said,. “Each year, we strive to make it better the following year.”
Patterson expressed his gratitude to the Rockbridge County public school system and the volunteers for helping make the event a success.
