New Dollar General Coming To Glasgow

Town Also Seeks Grant For Wastewater Plant Upgrades

Glasgow is getting a new Dollar General store.

The Town Council recently met with JMB Acquisition Company LLC and agreed to sell it a tract of property located at the intersection of Rockbridge Road and Jarvis Trail for the amount of $95,000, with the town paying a 6% seller fee. The buyer agreed to bring the property above the flood plain and accept the property as is.

Once graded and filled in to bring the height up about 12 feet, it will become the location of a new Dollar General. A Dollar General store is currently located on Blue Ridge Road.

Council’s discussion with JMB Acquisition occurred at a special meeting earlier in the month prior to Council’s regular meeting Sept. 12.

During the regular September meeting, Council held a public hearing and then approved filing an application for a grant from the USDA Rural Development for a proposed rehabilitation project for the wastewater treatment plant. The project “consists of asset renewals to ensure process and treatment reliability and a new headworks facility to remove debris at the head of the plant and reduce accumulation of debris in the oxidation ditch.”

Also at the meeting, Wes Hodges, with the Fly Fishing Guide Co. in Eagle Rock, spoke to Council about gaining entrance to the canoe launch area on the James River. Due to issues with the railroad, and having to access the canoe launch by passing through a walkway under the tracks, they have had to put up a gate and lock it. Hodges was assured of access with fishing groups if they could notify the town approximately when they would be there.

Farmers’ market manager Carolyn Bradley noted they have had a good season, and would close that weekend, Sept. 15 and 16 until next spring.

The town purchased a new zero turn mower and Mayor Paul Williams has been seen using it to mow town-owned lots.

Councilwoman Lisa Rogers noted the county assessment of property went up 20%, but they reduced the tax rate by 13% and the town should have followed suit, but tax bills are now ready to be sent out.

Rogers also suggested the town send a note of appreciation to businesses who have upgraded the appearance of their buildings.

Sonny Williams met with Town Manager Phil Robinette, expressing his desire to open a soft-serve business, noting he has the property and equipment. He requested aid in obtaining grant money to get started.

In personnel matters, Brianne Stinnett has been hired as administrative assistant. Tammy Cash is the new in-office director of finance, learning the computer system dealing with finance from Donna Connor who has been working from home on the town’s finance business.

Town Attorney Grace Crickenberger gave her notice of resignation, effective at the end of September.
