Charles Herbert Peter Schirmer, 82, of Fairfield passed after a long battle on Oct. 4, 2023, at Lewis Gale Montgomery in Blacksburg.
Born July 16, 1941, in Jersey City, N.J., he was the second of four boys to the late Ernest J. Schirmer and Freida Obelsar Schirmer.
Charles was a member of Vesuvius Baptist Church and retired as an art teacher after 33 years.
He loved to laugh and watch late night TV, especially Johnny Carson. Charles considered himself a “jack of all trades,” master of most, along with being a penny pincher. He always said, “Why buy when I can make it myself?”
Charles was always willing to give a helping hand and enjoyed metal relic hunting with his friend John.
Surviving are his wife, Donna Louise Hovis Schirmer; daughters, Pamela Schirmer VanNutt and husband Charles, and Rebecca Schirmer Bennett and husband Kurt; four grandchildren, Diana VanNutt Zhang and husband Mike, Garrett VanNutt and wife Julia, Colter Bennett and wife Emily, and Tessa Bennett Shelton and husband Daniel; two great-grandchildren, Gabriel VanNutt and Madelyn Zhang, and more on the way.
The funeral was conducted Saturday, Oct. 7, at Harrison Funeral Chapel by Pastor Tyler Clem. Burial followed at Mt. Carmel Presbyterian Cemetery.
Arrangements were by Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory. N-G N-G
