Teens Sought For Environthon Club

Informational Session Set For Thursday

Boxerwood is recruiting high school students for its second annual Envirothon Club.

Envirothon is a state and national natural resources competition in which high school students boost knowledge about wildlife, forestry, aquatics, and soil by hands-on activities, interaction with experts, and real-world problemsolving. The new local club is sponsored by the Natural Bridge Soil and Water Conservation District. There is no cost to participate.

Envirothon will meet at Boxerwood on Thursdays, 4 to 5:30 p.m. for 12 weeks, starting with an informational session this Thursday, Feb. 2. Depending on team interest, there is also possibility of one or more weekend expeditions. The program culminates in a regional competition at the end of April.

Envirothon is open to any Buena Vista, Lexington, or Rockbridge youth whether attending homeschool or public school in grades 9-12. No specific knowledge of natural resource topics is required, though teens with particular interest in one or more conservation areas are especially encouraged to be part of the team.

Head coach for the Envirothon team is Boxerwood educator Ginny Johnson. A recent college graduate, Johnson majored in geology and environmental studies. She is also a scuba diver and has participated in coral reef research. In addition to teaching with Boxerwood, she is a graduate student in natural resources at Virginia Tech.

As part of Envirothon activities, teens will also interact with variety of guest scientists, outdoorsmen/women, and other experts.

“We had a lot of fun last year,” Johnson remarked, adding she’d be happy to share more about the opportunity with any interested teen.
