8:30 p.m. Saturday - The Virginia State Police reported that troopers are working a fatal crash at the 202 mile marker northbound, just north of Fairfield in Rockbridge County. The crash occurred at 5:02 p.m.
An SUV stopped on the right shoulder of Interstate 81 and was struck by a tractor-trailer. There is one confirmed fatality.
The interstate is closed, and a detour has been set up by VDOT until the Crash Reconstruction Team completes their investigation.
Motorists should seek other routes until the roadway is opened. Traffic was backed up approximately 2 miles.
Meanwhile, VDOT is reporting U.S. 501 is closed one mile north of Va. 130 due to an accident as of 8:34 p.m. Also, one lane of I-81 southbound was closed at the 193 mile marker as of 7:40 p.m.
