Bobby Slagle of Rockbridge Recovery was recently presented with the Exceptional Volunteerism Award.
Virginia’s Year of the Peer initiative 2023 is a way for the Department of Health and Behavioral Services to celebrate champions of recovery, unify Peer Recovery Specialists, and build bridges of understanding with clinical colleagues, community partners, and organizations across Virginia.
“Slagle’s efforts have been an undeniable example of service of self,” said a spokesperson.
Slagle was given this honor at an awards ceremony in Harrisonburg on Oct. 13.
Since starting Rockbridge Recovery in 2022, under his leadership the organization has served over 120 individual clients in the area. They offer services though group meetings, individual counseling, their donation closet and transportation programs aimed to assist those recovering from substance abuse.
Rockbridge Recovery is in the process of renovating the first-ever recovery home in the area, slated to open in 2024.
“Bobby’s dedication and persistence has been the driving factor for Rockbridge Recovery’s success,” said Lori Turner, executive director of the Community Foundation who nominated Slagle for the award. “He has worked tirelessly to save lives and keep others from going down the same path of selfdestruction he once traveled.”
Year of the Peer represents an opportunity that captures the passion of the peer workforce. The mission is aimed to highlight the important role of peers and the positive impact peers bring to the table.
The vision of the program is to represent how Virginia has an integrated recovery-oriented system of care where peer specialists are valued for being champions, building connection and offering support to individuals with mental health and substance use challenges.
