Richard Clay “Dick” Emrey Jr., 63, Lexington native and lifelong resident, passed away peacefully in his home on Friday, Oct. 20, 2023, surrounded by his loving family.

Surviving Dick are his wife of 36 wonderful years, Karen Jarvis Emrey; his sons, R. Clay Emrey III (Spencer) and Bryan Emrey (Regan), both of Lexington; four sisters, Marilyn Woody (David), Barbara Meier (Bill), Susan Bastnagel, and Dick’s twin, Katharine Schulze (Ed). Dick is also survived by his wife’s family, Larry Jarvis (Lucy), Raymond Jarvis (Suzanne), and Kevin Jarvis (Cindy); and by many nieces and nephews and their families. Dick was joyfully anticipating the arrival of his first grandchild, Lainey Grace, in early November.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Richard Clay Emrey and Marilyn Hoke Emrey, and by his brothersin- law, David Jarvis and Raymond Bastnagel.

Dick graduated from Washington and Lee University in 1985 and worked as an independent insurance agent for 35 years. For eight years, he ran his own agency, Emrey and Amonette, with his partner, Gregg Amonette, before selling it in 2019 to Campbell Insurance.

Dick had a deep love and devotion for his family, friends, and community, and proudly served them in many ways. He was a lifelong member of Lexington Presbyterian Church, where he served two terms as an elder, served on the Property Committee for many years, and was an usher. He was also a lifelong member of Lexington Golf & Country Club, where he served on the board, assisted various committees, and organized member-member golf tournaments.

He was active in other local organizations, including RARO coaching, Lexington Chamber of Commerce, United Way, and Rockbridge County Public Schools Foundation. For more than two decades, he and Karen were passionate fundraisers and advocates for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

A celebration of life will be conducted Friday, Oct. 27, at 2 p.m. at Lexington Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Drew Ditzel.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to either Lexington Presbyterian Church, 120 S. Main St., Lexington, VA 24450, or Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 7202 Glen Forest Drive, Suite 102, Richmond, VA 23226.
