Oct. 24, 1973

A tanker loaded with 8,700 gallons of liquid propane gas took a tumble off a C&O railroad trestle leading to the Locher Silica Corp. plant in Goshen. The Goshen Volunteer Fire Company worked 14 1/2 hours hosing down the escaping gas before the pressure was relieved enough to be safe. - Approximately 170 entries were received from area students in grades four through seven in the Rockbridge Area League of Women Voters poster contest to promote the Nov. 6 election. - Jon Wright of Roanoke came to Lexington to give two talks about transcendental meditation.

The Rockbr idge County Board of Supervisors approved funding for a 4-H director, a move that essentially saved the program from extinction in Rockbridge County. -U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers arrested four undocumented workers from Lithuania who were working on a cleaning crew at Walmart. - Seniors Krysten Squires and Devin Coleman were crowned homecoming queen and king at Parry McCluer High School.
