The Botetourt-Rockbridge Regional Library asked the four area governing bodies for financial help. The library had recently acquired a new bookmobile only to learn that the federal funds it had been receiving had been eliminated for the next year. - President Nixon’s proposed budget for 1973-74 did not include funds for the Buena Vista flood control project. - Carol Berger, wife of Capt. James E. Berger, was given advance notice that President Nixon was going to announce the completion of the Vietnam cease fire agreement and her husband would be home soon. Capt. Berger had been a prisoner of war since 1966 when his fighter-bomber crashed north of Hanoi.

Golf designers, hydrologists and Buena Vista city officials spent several hours studying the property where the proposed municipal golf course would be built. Several test trenches were dug into the property to gauge how much it would cost to dig through rock formations should the course be developed there. - Among the seven victims of the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster was astronaut David Brown whose father was Washington and Lee University alumnus Paul Brown. Columbia was destroyed when reentering the earth’s atmosphere after a 16-day scientific mission. - The Rockbridge Historical Society contracted with Charles A. Bodie of Lexington to write a comprehensive history of Rockbridge County, the first in 80 years.
