The seventh annual Nasty 9 Trail Run and 4-Mile Challenge drew 80 runners, taking on the hills and single track trails at Brushy Hills on Oct. 7.
The event, founded and directed by Peter Jetton, raised about $4,000. The money went to the Friends of Brushy Hills and, for the first time, to local running programs at Rockbridge County High School, Parry Mc-Cluer High School and Maury River Middle School.
There were 37 runners in the 9-mile race, which included over 2,000 feet of uphill. The 4-mile race, which had about 500 feet of climbing, welcomed 43 runners.
Gavin Jenkins, 25, won the 9-mile race in 1 hour, 5 minutes and 19 seconds, a new course record. Placing second was Tanner Smith, 28, in 1:09:55.8. Garrison Famiglio, 20, finished third in 1:12.23.
The top female finisher was Elizabeth Kosmas, 53, placing 17th overall in 1:44:20.2. Placing second among females was Barbara Kelsey, 55, finishing 23rd overall in 1:52:17.3. The third female finisher was Yara White, 44, coming in 29th overall in 2:00:02.3.
The winner of the 4-mile race was Sam Allen, 46, in 32:13.5. Jalen Frantal, 25, placed second in 36:12.3, and Nicholas Alden, 30, finished third in 37:42.3.
Placing first among females was Frances Barham, 21, finishing sixth overall in 43:03. Natalie Beers, 26, was the second female finisher, placing 14th overall in 47:33.8. Placing third among females was Hope Huger, 20, finishing 15th overall in 47:34.1.
