The Rockbridge County High School competition cheerleading team finished its season by placing fifth at the Valley District competition on Tuesday of last week at Harrisonburg High School.
Only the top three teams in Class 3 advanced to the Region 3C competition.
Harrisonburg won, but the Blue Streaks are in Class 5, so they advanced in a different region. Advancing from the Valley District to the Region 3C competition were runner-up Turner Ashby, thirdplace Broadway and fourth-place East Rockingham, which finished 28 points ahead of the Wildcats.
Reviewing the season, RC head coach Shannon Bryan said the Wildcats “faced a lot of adversity this year, with multiple injuries that put athletes out for the season, which hurt us, but the team did not let it stop them when it came to making all the necessary changes each time and pushing through each competition.”
“With each issue that occurred, it resulted in changing our routine every time,” added Bryan, noting that the team never once performed the same routine twice.
The RC coach added that her cheerleaders “excelled with anything I threw at them to make it work. They pushed each other and supported each other in every way, and I couldn’t be more proud of them.”
Four RC cheerleaders were named alldistrict. Junior Addy Clark and sophomore Willow Rogers were named to the all-district first team, while seniors Abre Smith and Marcella Wallin were selected to the all-district second team.
Other members of the team were seniors Hallie Darmante, Chelsey Hall, Emma Hall, Emily Humphreys, Katherine Lotts, Jaci Moore and Kaley Tomlin; juniors Ella Culp, Myranda Deacon, Addison Flint, Sybile Leygonie and Cameron Terry; and sophomores Lillian Ballard, Gabriella Brown and Emma Mines.
Bryan’s assistant coaches this season were Ellie Kabzinski, Lindsey Rasmey and Sarah Parnell.
