Amarilis “Amy” Hudson has been serving as the interim treasurer for the city of Buena Vista since Mary Lee Huffman retired earlier this year. Hudson has been with the Buena Vista’s treasurer’s office for 16 years, serving for 10 years as a clerk under Yolanda ‘Landy’ Boatwright and then as deputy treasurer under Huffman. This fall, she is running unopposed in the election for the seat. Hudson says she “gained valuable knowledge” from both of her predecessors while working in the office. She told The News-Gazette that she is running for the office because “I love Buena Vista and want to continue to serve its citizens.”
“We currently have a great team dedicated to providing the excellent customer service the citizens are accustomed to and deserve,” she said. “Our staff is hardworking, helpful, and friendly. Customers have been known to come to our office saying ‘I know this question is not for your office, but you are always so nice and friendly when I come to pay my water bill, can you help me?’ We always seem to figure out how to help. I love that about our office – the willingness to help even when it doesn’t pertain to our office.”
As treasurer, Hudson is responsible for receiving and collecting revenue for the city of Buena Vista, as well as safekeeping, accounting for and distribution of said revenue. If elected, she says she will “continue to strive to do the job at the highest level” by sharing her 16 years of knowledge and “ensuring that everyone in the office has access to the available training provided by the Treasurer’s Association of Virginia and the Commonwealth of Virginia Learning Center.”
“My parents instilled in me a strong work ethic,” she said. “My mom still says, ‘In all that you do, put forth your best effort.’ Continuing education leads to the continued success of the treasurer’s office and the city of Buena Vista.”
