Brooke Tomlin has more than 10 years of experience working in offices of the commissioner of revenue office, both in Rockbridge County and Buena Vista. She began in the city of Buena Vista, serving as the chief deputy to Commissioner Mar Vita Flint before transitioning to the county office in 2018 to serve as chief deputy to Commissioner David Whitesell. Outside of the commissioner’s office, Tomilin has worked in the accounting department at Sayre Enterprises in Buena Vista. She is running unopposed for the office of Commissioner of Revenue for Rockbridge County, looking to succeed Whitesell, who is not seeking reelection.
“Ultimately, I enjoy working with the public, meeting new people, and helping those around me,” she told The News-Gazette. “When Commissioner Whitesell decided to retire this year, it gave me an opportunity to run and show how dedicated I am to continue serving the citizens of Rockbridge County.”
The commissioner of revenue is the chief tax assessing officer for the county. If elected to the position, Tomlin would be responsible for administering the food and beverage tax, transient occupancy tax, cigarette tax and admissions tax for the county, as well as any tax relief for the elderly, disabled and veterans. She will also be responsible for assessing personal property of both individuals and businesses, construction and improvements on real estate and all businesses sited within the county for business licenses, among other duties.
“As commissioner of revenue, I will uphold the Constitution and the laws of Virginia,” she said. “I will treat each citizen of Rockbridge County with fairness, courtesy and respect. If you have a question or a concern, please come talk to me. I will be more than happy to explain to you how your assessment was created. I understand that no one likes paying taxes so I want to make that process as painless as possible.”
