Jan. 27, 2023 Editor, The News-Gazette: We have enjoyed a week of meaningful and well-organized activities commemorating Dr. King’s life, and now we hear from a southern governor that Black history lacks educational value.
I join the many in Lexington and Rockbridge County who say: “We disrespectfully disagree!”
While the appeal of this bone tossed to his base is apparent, the timing of his bizarre pronouncement may actually have the opposite effect, by making the general population more aware that Black History Month is upon us. He has started what to his dismay can become a national dialogue that causes many more people than before to see the true significance Black history to our state and the nation. That is a delicious irony we should welcome and help to bring about.
The Education Committee of the Rockbridge NAACP wishes to thank Brian Butterfield at the Lexington Coffee Shop for making his window on Washington Street available to us again this year for an educational display on Black History created by Lisa Tracy and Marquita Dunn. Please drop by the shop, enjoy a cup of coffee, and view the display. ROGER CROCKETT Rockbridge County
