Community Halloween Events Start Saturday

Get out your candy bowls and finish up work on your children’s costumes – and yours. Halloween time has arrived, and there’s plenty of spooky fun planned in the Rockbridge area over the coming days. As usual, there are trick-or-treat events planned in downtown Lexington and Buena Vista on Halloween Day, Tuesday, but the fun actually gets underway in Glasgow and Glen Maury Park this Saturday with trunk-or-treat events. And there are several other events on the Halloween horizon. Among those other events are the National Honor Society Halloween Fair at Rockbridge County High School from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday and a Halloween cakewalk and raffle at the Natural Bridge firehouse sponsored by the Natural Bridge Ruritan Club starting at 6 p.m. on Saturday. The trunk-or-treat event at Glen Maury Park in Buena Vista starts at 5 p.m. Saturday, and area residents wishing to hand out candy from their vehicles are welcome to participate. Some of the campers are also expected

to participate.

The trunk-or-treat event in Glasgow will run from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Locher Pavilion, 515 9th St. Participants are asked to bring a non-perishable (nonexpired) food item to receive a ticket that’s good for a slice of pizza, chips, drink and s’mores. Those setting up trunks are asked to arrive no later than 5:30 p.m. There will be a prize for the best decorated trunk.

On Halloween Day, Main Street Lexington will sponsor the annual downtown trick-or-treating from 3:30 to 5 p.m. for children 12 and under.

Besides merchants handing out candy, the afternoon will feature live entertainment. Halestone Dance Studio will perform at 4 p.m., while the Rockbridge Ballet will take the stage at 4:30. Both performances will take place in the old Courthouse Square.

As a safety precaution, the central downtown streets will be closed to vehicle traffic to allow the safe passage of the little ones. Closed from 3:15 to 5:15 p.m. will be Main Street from Preston Street to Henry Street; Washington Street from Randolph Street to Jefferson Street; and Nelson Street from Randolph Street to Jefferson Street. Members of the Lexington Police Department will be on hand to help direct the flow of pedestrians. Caution while driving is urged.

In Buena Vista on Halloween Day, Main Street Buena Vista and the city of Buena Vista will present the annual Spookacular from 4 to 6 p.m.

Businesses and organizations will be handing out candy to trick-ortreaters; there will be games and prizes, and a costume contest. Registration for the costume contest runs from 4 to 4:45 p.m., with the contest starting at 5.
