Monday Results: PM Harriers Win, Netters Fall

Led by individual winner Kovyk Chandler, the Parry Mc-Cluer High School boys cross country team won the Region 1C title on Monday evening at Blacksburg High School, while PM sophomore girl Kyra Lee also advanced to the Class 1 state meet.

Also on Monday, the PM volleyball team concluded its season with a 3-0 road loss to Auburn in the Region 1C quarterfinals.

At the cross country meet, the PM boys scored 45 points, while Eastern Montgomery placed second of six teams with 54 points, and Auburn (67) finished third.

The top three teams and the top five individuals outside of those teams advancing to the state meet.

Chandler, a senior, completed the hilly 5-kilometer course in 16 minutes, 39.3 seconds to repeat as the regional champion. His younger brother, Kebryl, a freshman, placed second of 51 runners in 16:52.

In the girls’ race, Lee placed seventh of 44 runners in 22:08.6 to earn a trip to the state meet for the second year in a row.

The Class 1 state meet will take place on Saturday, Nov. 11 at Green Hill Park at Salem, with the boys’ race following at 1:45 p.m. For more on the regional meet, visit www.thenewsgazette. com, and see next week’s newspaper for the full story.

On the volleyball court, Auburn (22-3), the second seed from the Mountain Empire District, defeated the Fighting Blues, the third seed from the Pioneer District, 25-6, 25-9, 25-14.

Sydney Mahaffey recorded two kills, one block and three digs for the Blues, while Logan Vest collected five digs, and Natalie Mohler recorded two assists and three digs.

The Blues completed the season with a 9-10 overall record. They finished second in the Pioneer in the regular season, posting an 8-2 mark in district play.
