Jan. 29, 2023 Editor, The News-Gazette: In response to the letter of Jan. 25 by Ann Olson of Rockbridge Baths, her remarks regarding the photographs The News-Gazette printed of the service that was held at the cemetery of “the glum assortment” (Ms. Olsen’s words), I take personal umbrage.
First, it doesn’t matter if Lee-Jackson Day is no longer a state holiday – no one needs the commonwealth’s approval to remember Generals Lee and Jackson.
Secondly, those who attend the cemetery service are there not only to pay their respects to the generals, but also to remember their own dead. It is a solemn occasion.
If Ms. Olson admires Dr. King’s message, her unkind remarks show she does not take his message of tolerance for all to heart.
So, Ms. Olson, you may want to consider keeping such personal opinions to yourself and think of others who do not share your way of thinking and leave them alone.
