Thursday morning - Washington and Lee University's executive director of communications and public affairs, Drewry Sackett, issued the following statement following yesterday's incident:
"This afternoon Washington and Lee University received notice of a possible threat of violence on campus, prompting the university to issue a shelter-in-place order while law enforcement conducted a comprehensive search of campus as a precaution. There was no violent incident, and no active threat was found by law enforcement during their investigation. After law enforcement completed their search of campus, the shelter-in-place order was lifted at 7:23 p.m. The safety of our campus is our utmost priority, and we work closely with local and state law enforcement to monitor potential threats. We are grateful to our Public Safety officers; the local, regional, and state law enforcement personnel who responded quickly; and to those in the local community who offered support."
8:15 p.m. - The shelter in place for W&L employees and students was lifted at 7:23 this evening, according to a post on the W&L website. The search was completed by that time and all of the buildings were considered clear. Law enforcement will provide additional security on campus tonight.
5:15 p.m. - The shelter in place continues at W&L while law enforcement is conducting a building-by-building search of campus, according to posts on the W&L website. Students who reside on campus but are currently off-campus have been told they may shelter at the Rockbridge County Courthouse for now.
4:40 p.m. Wednesday - Washington and Lee University employees have been under a shelter-in-place warning since 3:45 this afternoon following the university's receipt of a possible threat to campus.
However, at 4:30, W&L posted that "law enforcement has confirmed no active violence at this time." The investigation is ongoing and W&L employees are being told to continue to shelter in place.
