Rockbridge County is continuing to implement its strategic solid waste plan to replace unstaffed green box Dumpster sites with a smaller number of staffed collection centers.
The latest staffed collection center being pursued is one for Murat. The Planning Commission last Wednesday, Nov. 8, approved a site plan for the center, which is going on the west side of Murat Road (Va. 675), approximately 240 feet north of the intersection with Collierstown Road (Va. 251) The existing unstaffed collection center at the intersection of Big Hill Road (Va. 646) and Turnpike Road (Va. 770) is to be removed upon the completion of the Murat collection center.
To date, the number of unstaffed green box sites has been reduced from 25 to 10. In response to a question raised at the Planning Commission meeting, Daniel Miear, the county’s solid waste and recycling manager, said the reduction in green box sites has not led to an increase in littering or illegal dumping. Staffed collection centers accept both recycling materials and trash.
The county’s six staffed collection centers are open Mondays through Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., and on Sundays from 1 to 6 p.m. The centers are located at 260 Greenhouse Road (north of Lexington), in Natural Bridge Station at 1615 Wert Faulkner Highway, in Fancy Hill at 3985 S. Lee Highway, in Fairfield at 6019 N. Lee Highway, in Kerrs Creek at 20 Fredericksburg Road and in Goshen at 9350 Maury River Road.
