May Second In NCAA South

The Southern Virginia University men’s cross Country team showcased its prowess at the NCAA Division South Region Championship, claiming a commendable fifth-place finish with a score of 213 in Berry, Ga. The W&L men’s cross country team also stepped up, placing second of 24 teams to earn an at-large bid to the national championships.

SVU junior Dylan May, a 2020 Parry McCluer High School graduate who won the Class 1 state title as a high school senior in 2019, led the Knights with an outstanding performance, placing second in a time of 24 minutes, 34.64 seconds on the 8-kilometer course. His achievement was nearly 30 seconds faster than his time when he clinched victory at the USA South Championship two weeks earlier. May only trailed Lynchburg’s Frank Csorba, who won in 24:27.23.

Also continuing to shine was SVU senior Kedryn Chandler, a 2021 PM graduate, who finished 33rd in a personal-record time of 25:59.5.

May will prepare for the NCAA Division III national championships, which will take place on Saturday at Big Spring High School in Newville, Pa., with the men’s race starting at 11 a.m., followed by the women’s race at noon. Other SVU runners were waiting to see if they would receive at-large bids.

With six harriers in the top 30, the W&L men scored 71 points to trail only Lynchburg’s 37 points, while Emory (76) placed third. Rounding out the top six were Berry (85), SVU (213) and Rhodes (244).

W&L’s top two runners were junior Row Stern (sixth, 25:00.48) and sophomore Keaton Rush (seventh, 25:11.04).

Also advancing to the national championships were two W&L women, senior Elise Molinaro and junior Claire Hamlet. Molinaro placed seventh at the regional meet, finishing the 6K course in 22:11.59, while Hamlet finished 15th in 22:33.28.

The W&L women placed third of 22 teams with 82 points, finishing behind Lynchburg (40) and Emory (40). Rounding out the top five teams were Catholic (137) and Shenandoah (178).

W&L Women

Net ODAC Title

The W&L women’s volleyball team won its 19th Old Dominion Athletic Conference title, earning a 3-1 win over Randolph-Macon College in the finals on Saturday afternoon in Ashland.

After dropping the first set, the Generals (22-10 overall, 8-4 ODAC) bounced back to capture a 20-25, 25-17, 25-15, 25-16 victory.

Riley Debiec led W&L with 15 kills, Allie Buchholz dished out a match-high 46 assists, and Vivi Vasuquez paced the Generals with 35 digs.

W&LMen Advance

The W&L men’s soccer team won its first two games in the NCAA Division III tournament last weekend to advance to the Round of 16.

On Saturday, the Generals (14-4-4) beat Western Connecticut State 2-0 in Lexington. Evan DiPaula and Weyimi Agbeyegbe each scored a goal for the Generals, and W&L goalkeeper Will Joseph made four saves.

Also playing at home in the second round on Sunday, W&L beat SUNY Oneonta 2-1. Grant McCarty scored W&L’s first goal, and Agbeyegbe scored the second goal after receiving a free kick from McCarty. In goal, Joseph made four saves.

SVU, W&L Women Fall

The SVU and W&L women’s soccer teams both concluded their seasons by losing in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament on Friday in Newark, N.J.

SVU (13-6-1 overall, 9-0-0 USA South Conference) suffered a 3-0 loss to New York University in Newark, N.J. The Knights were coming off winning their first-ever USA South Conference title in program history.

The Generals (13-4-4 overall, 7-1-2 ODAC), who were ODAC runners-up to Virginia Wesleyan, lost 1-0 to No. 3 Carnegie Mellon.
