Ayers, Ojure Whitesell Win In Elections

Cash, Poluikis, Webb Take BV Council Seats

Leslie Ayers, Lenna Ojure and Melissa “Missy” Whitesell were the winners of contested races in Rockbridge County’s elections last week. Ayers was reelected Buffalo District supervisor, Ojure was elected Buffalo District School Board member and Whitesell was elected county treasurer.

In Buena Vista, two incumbent City Council members were defeated. The top three vote-getters among five candidates vying for three City Council seats were Ronald Cash, Michelle Poluikis and incumbent Steve Webb.

Retired teacher Paula Charlton drew the most votes among five candidates running for three Buena Vista School Board seats. Two of three incumbent School Board members retained their seats – Teresa Ellison and Wayne Flint.

Glasgow Mayor Paul Williams was reelected mayor over challenger Joshua Fitz Two incumbent members of Glasgow Town Council, Lisa Rogers and Tom Camden, were reelected without ballot opposition. Kent Dunn received the most write-in votes for the third Town council seat up for election.

Write-in votes will likely determine who will fill one of two county seats on the Natural Bridge Soil and Water Conservation District board of directors. Charles L. Cummings received the most write-in votes for that seat.

In the three races for Rockbridge area representation in the General Assembly, Republican Del. Ellen Campbell defeated Democratic nominee Randall Wolf for House of Delegates District 36, Republican Del. Terry Austin was the winner over Democratic nominee Stephanie Clark for House of Delegates District 37 and Republican Del. Christopher Head won against Democratic nominee Jade Harris for state Senate District 3.

Voter turnout in Rockbridge County was 56 percent. In Lexington it was 36 percent and in Buena Vista it was 31 percent.

Local electoral boards met Monday for the final canvassing of election results from last Tuesday, Nov. 7. The state will certify the election results on Dec. 4.

As of yesterday morning (Tuesday, Nov. 14), here are the vote tallies from the contested Rockbridge area elections: Rockbridge County Board of Supervisors, Buffalo District – Ayers, 936; Mack Smith, 773.

Rockbridge County School Board, Buffalo District – Ojure, 819; Anne Russek, 716.

Rockbridge County treasurer – Whitesell, 3,156; Michele Clark, 2,796.

Buena Vista City Council (three seats) – Cash, 590; Poluikis, 563; Webb, 562; Stanley Coffey, 540; Cheryl Hickman, 511; Jennifer Humphrey, 401; Michele Casale, 155.

Buena Vista School Board – Charlton, 707; Ellison, 658; Flint, 642; Mac Felts, 623; Brooke Baker, 499.

Winning uncontested races in the Rockbridge area were: Tyson Cooper, Buena Vista mayor; Amy Hudson, Buena Vista treasurer; David McDaniel, Natural Bridge member of county Board of Supervisor; Bob Day, South River member of county Board of Supervisors; Kathy Burant, Natural Bridge member of county School Board; Neil Whitmore, Walkers Creek member of county School Board; Steve Funkhouser, Rockbridge County and Lexington sheriff; Jared Moon, Rockbridge County and Lexington commonwealth’s attorney; Michelle Trout, Rockbridge County and Lexington clerk of circuit court; Brooke Tomlin, Rockbridge County commissioner of revenue; Timothy Goodbar, county seat on Natural Bridge Soil and Water Conservation District board; Charles Winder and Beecher “Billy” Grose Jr., Lexington seats on the NBSWCD board; and Herbie Hurrman and Robert Deyo, Buena Vista seats on NBSWCD board.
