Lycoming Edges W&L

The W&L football team concluded its season with a 20-17 home loss to Lycoming College in the inaugural Cape Charles Bowl on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field in Lexington.

The Warriors led 10-3 at halftime before W&L (8-3 overall, 6-1 ODAC) battled back in the third quarter to take the lead. Marcus Payne capped off a Generals’ 12-play, 75-yard drive with a five-yard rushing touchdown to put the Generals up 17-13. The Warriors’ Terrence Oliver then scored on a 75-yard run with 58 seconds left in the third quarter for what turned out to be the winning score for Lycoming (5-6). The fourth quarter was scoreless.

Payne ran for two TDs for W&L, while quarterback Stephen Murrin threw for 110 yards and ran for 97 yards. Jacob Romero rushed for 100 yards for the Generals.

W&L Netters Fall

Playing in the NCAA Division III tournament for the third time in the last five years, the W&L women’s volleyball team saw its season end with a 3-1 road loss to 10th-ranked Berry College in the first round on Thursday in Mount Berry, Ga.

With the 25-18, 25-27, 25-17, 25-20 victory, the Vikings advanced to the regional semifinals, where they suffered a 3-2 home loss to No. 11 Trinity University on Friday, ending their season with a record of 27-6.

Leading W&L (22-11) in the first-round match were Grace Mitchener with 12 kills, while Allie Buchholz recorded her 23rd double-double of the season with 37 assists and 18 attacks. Vivi Vasquez led the Generals with 24 digs.

The Generals won 20 or more wins for the 24th time in program history and 20th season for head coach Bryan Snyder. W&L went 8-4 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, winning its 19th ODAC title and fourth in the last five years. W&L finished its season with a 22-11 overall record and an 8-4 mark in conference play.
