Diette, current chair of the Lexington School Board, will be leaving the Board at the end of the year.
At the November meeting, Diette said that the December meeting will be his last at a School Board member.
Diette’s replacement will be chosen by Lexington City Council.
Nonresident Tuition Hike Suggested
At the Nov. 7 meeting of the Lexington School Board, a suggestion to raise nonresident tuition rates was discussed.
Timothy Diette, board chair, said that raising cost for nonresidents makes sense as the Board requests more money from citizens, through Lexington City Council.
“This is not about punishing our folks from outside the city; my first few years for my kids I was a payer of this,” he said. “It is about, if we’re asking more of our local Lexington residents to be paying for our schools, it also makes sense to be asking for a bit more from our other tuition payers.”
Diette suggested a $100 increase per student.
“I don’t want to put a shock on the family. We do know that everyone is going through and experiencing challenging times, so one recommendation, not having increased it in years and years would be a modest $100 increase per student, and that’s a 6.7% increase,” he said.
“It’s not insignificant, obviously, but on the other hand, we are asking City Council money for that, it seems only fair to be asking all of our constituents to pay their share.”
The School Board has not yet taken any action on this recommendation.
