The W&L men’s cross country team placed 30th of 32 teams at the NCAA Division III national championship meet, while two W&L women and Southern Virginia University junior Dylan May competed well on Saturday at Big Spring High School in Newville, Pa.
The Generals tallied 681 points to conclude the season. Pomona- Pulitzer won the men’s title with 158 points, while the University of Wisconsin-Lacrosse (159) placed second, and North Central (Ill.) (169) finished third. Rounding out the top five were Williams (212) and Wartburg (232). Dickinson College played host for the meet. The W&L men had placed second in the NCAA Division III South Region championship meet a week earlier, following a runner-up finish at the Old Dominion Athletic Conference meet.
Junior Row Sterne led the W&L men at the national meet, placing 70th of 294 runners, completing the 8-kilometer course in 25 minutes, 31 seconds. Wisconsin- LaCrosse’s Ethan Gregg won the race in 24:02.4.
For SVU, May, a 2020 Parry McCluer High School graduate, placed 28th in 24:58.1. Last year, May finished 75th. Following his third consecutive title in the USA South Conference championship meet to lead his team to the team this year, May was the runner-up at the NCAA Division South Region championship meet. He was the only SVU runner competing at the national meet.
In the women’s race, W&L senior Elise Molinaro wrapped up her college cross country career by placing 114th of 293 harriers, completing the 6K course in 22:39.5, passing a runner in the final stretch. Junior teammate Claire Hamlet finished 251st in 23:33.4, outkicking four runners in the final kilometer. St. Benedict’s Fiona Smith won the race by more than a minute, finishing in 19:54.1.
