The DeLaney Center at Washington and Lee University will launch its inaugural Race and Southern-ness Symposium next month.
On Dec. 1 at 5 p.m. in Stackhouse Theater, Derrick Alridge, John Grammer, and Blair LM Kelley, the heads of centers that study race and Southern identity at the University of Virginia, Sewanee University, and the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill respectively, will participate in an hour-long panel where each of them will probe how the South’s racial realities continue conditioning American democracy.
Following their talks, a moderator will lead the panelists in a conversation centered on issues raised during their remarks. The program will conclude with a questionand- answer session where the audience will join the discussion.
There is no charge to attend this event.
Established in 2021 and named after “exemplary Lexingtonian” and beloved Washington and Lee Professor Theodore “Ted” DeLaney, the DeLaney Center serves the campus and the Lexington/ Rockbridge community by hosting events that explore Southern race relations, culture and politics. The center’s inaugural Race and Southernness Symposium i marks a new chapter in its endeavors.
